Beschreibung
Based on system analyses investigations about the assessment of sustainability are carried out by our group in five research projects, three of them within the fifth framework programme of the European Union. Partners with different knowledge as also with different cultural background, as for example from China and the United States, are offering a wide spectrum of interpretation of sustainable development. A common agreement about sustainable development can be found on a very general level of definition. However, differences in interpretation and problems are rapidly increasing if the discussions become more related to the specific situations. Several causes for this fact could be identified. The most crucial cause is the asymmetry between dynamic interactions in long term development, and the perception of peoples involved in the real processes. Long term development in dynamic systems includes unpredictabilities and contra intuitive effects. Human decision making is on the other hand strongly influenced by actual conditions and individual experiences. Adaptive approaches are needed to bridge this gap, and to achieve a sustainable development. Assessment of sustainable development has to consider these aspects. Potentials and limits for standardisation of assessment methods will be discussed under particular consideration of practical applicability and system interactions.Zeitraum | 15 Mai 2003 → 17 Mai 2003 |
