Augmented Reality for HVAC Sound Sources

Heating and cooling appliances, such as air-to-water heat pumps, fans and recoolers emit noise. Already 40% of Austrians feel effected with noise pollution increasing in recent years. In view of the steady expansion of renewable energies to combat climate change, air condition units will see a significantly increase in numbers. To assist in minimizing noise emissions to the polulation in urban areas, methods enabling simple and intuitive access to noise and its reduction have been developed. Modern methods of sound measurement and advances in augmented reality are a promising combination, wich allows for a virtual representation of the sound emitting device and the resulting sound dispersion. In an application for mobile devices utilizing direction-dependent sound propagation virtually in a real environment, a virtual noise emitting HVAC system can be freely positioned using augmented reality. Then the source can be simply moved to find the acoustically optimal location and orientation. At any position selected by the observer, the sound pressure level can be determined and visualized taking into eventually into account absorption and reflection behaviour by recognizing the environment. The technology assists the planning and installation procedure of heating and air conditioning units with focus on noise pollution. In that way, it will help increasing the acceptance of heat pumps and thus lead to a higher proportion of renewable energy.
