Abstract

This paper describes an innovative approach to teaching soft
skills in the eld of cyber security. First, an overview of the current situation in Europe is given, which emphasizes the need for cyber security
to be based not only on technical skills, but also on soft skills, such as
critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal communication and empathy. The COLTRANE framework is then presented to help teachers
teach soft skills more eectively in their classrooms. The framework consists of dierent phases that teachers can go through to ensure that they
can optimally support their students. These include, for example, identifying relevant soft skills, developing appropriate learning objectives and
designing learning environments that promote soft skills. To demonstrate
the application of the framework, learners are confronted with real-life
challenges and have to work together to nd solutions by combining their
technical skills with their soft skills. This approach ensures that learners not only acquire the necessary technical knowledge, but also develop
the ability to apply this knowledge to real-life situations, communicating, collaborating and acting empathically. By applying the COLTRANE
framework, teachers can prepare their learners for a future career in cybersecurity, which requires not only technical skills, but also the ability
to solve complex problems and collaborate eectively with others.
