Abstract
A multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) development
platform, which will aid the development process and
optimization of MIMO equipment, is described. The development
platform comprises a transmitter, a channel emulator
and a receiver unit. The channel emulator uses a geometry
based stochastic channel model (GSCM) based on
the COST 259 recommendations [1]. The hardware consists
of a scalable architecture of up to ten signal processing
boards, which allow for unlimited and reproducible realtime
simulation of MIMO systems. The development platform
also features interfaces for digital baseband, analogue
baseband, intermediate frequency (IF) and radio frequency
(RF) and supports multiple radio systems as well as multiple
frequency bands by altering single software modules.
A mature feature is the support of rapid prototyping and
hardware in the loop. So, designing and validating algorithms
can be performed efficiently, resulting in shorter development
cycles and lower costs. The power of the development
platform is demonstrated by an implementation of
a smart antenna receiver for the GSM mobile standard and
the corresponding uncoded bit error rates.
