Abstract

In an attempt to improve the overall energy sustainability in buildings, the idea of integrating Small Wind Turbines (SWT) in building envelopes is gaining popularity despite numerous practical problems. In addition to the safety and security issues, very important question is the energy efficient SWT integration in the building envelope, having in mind very limited energy potential of the wind in urban areas. The present paper addresses this question by investigating the influence of the building geometry on the SWT energy potential. This investigation is performed by means of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where the wind energy fluxes of the air flows around buildings in urban environments (obtained from numerical simulations) are compared for several different urban geometries.
