poly(N-isoproprylacrylamide)(PNIPAAm)terpolymerthatwasattachedtoametallicsensorsurfacein
order tosimultaneouslyserveasabindingmatrixandanopticalwaveguide.Refractiveindexchanges
that areaccompaniedwiththespecificcaptureofbiomoleculesfromanaqueoussampleonthesensor
surface wereprobedbyresonantlyexcitedhydrogelopticalwaveguidemodes.Toopticallyexciteand
interrogatethesewaves,anopticalsetupbasedonKretschmannconfigurationofattenuatedtotal
reflection(ATR)methodthatiscompatiblewithsurfaceplasmonresonance(SPR)wasused.We
demonstratethatHOWSoffersahigherbindingcapacity,goodanti-foulingproperties,improvedfigure
of merit,andE2detectionlimitof50pg/mlwhichisseventimesbetterthanthatobtainedbyaregular
surface plasmonresonance(SPR)biosensor.
