Abstract
A whole body counter is a device for the detection of gamma-emitting radionuclides in the human body. For the evaluation of the body burden of a person by incorporated radioactive material, it is necessary to identify and to measure the amounts of the radionuclides deposited in the body. With mobile whole body counters it is possible within a short time to get information about-the internal contamination of a population in a specific area. This information is important for the selection and use of contaminated food and for the estimation of the dose by inhalation.
After the accident in Tschernobyl whole body counter measurements were heavily needed and the capacity of the existing stationary whole body counters was to low. The trouble in Austria is that most of the existing whole body counters are located in the eastern part of the country. A mobile whole body counter would be a useful and advisible addition to the existing stationary whole body counters.
The mobile, whole body counter consists of a container equipped with four measuring devices. It can be moved on normal roads to the place where it is used. It is possible to measure more than 100 persons per day. For all parts of the whole body counter and the shielding of the highsensitive detectors low level radioactive material has to be used. Because our company has the capability for measuring low radioactivity in different materials this can easily be checked and therefor attained. Airfilter in the ventilationsystem prevent radioactive contaminated air to be blown into the container and a heavy shielding protects the detectors against environmental radiation, so that it is possible to operate the whole body counter under extreme conditions in heavy contaminated areas.
The mobile whole body counter fits to the decontamination equipment of the army.
To keep the mobile whole body counter operative and to distribute the costs for operation and maintenance it can also be used for civilian purposes.
