Abstract
Following a review on the Ti-N and Nb-N systems the phase reactions in the Nb-N system are discussed. Insight into these systems was possible because of the use of in-situ investigation techniques such as DSC and HTXRD as well as diffusion couples, which partly represent an in-situ tool, too. Phase reactions in the Ti-Nb-N system were investigated by (Ti, Nb)N/Nb2/N diffusion couples and by nitridation. Metallography, EPMA and AES were employed for characterisation. The Nb2N phase dissolves a substantial amount of Ti. At 1800°C (Ti, Nb)N with 75 and 63% Ti atoms on the metal sublattice can demix into -Ti0.92Nb0.08N and -Ti0.60Nb0.40N.
