Abstract

This project was funded by the Austrian Road Safety Fund. It aimed at seeking answers to road safety related topics regarding e-bicycles and e-mopeds - specific research was performed on vehicle dynamics together with subjective experience of riders. There were measurable vehicle specific differences, due to different vehicle power management sensors, engine concepts and control units. A relevant output is that riding in a bend in combination with a breaking manoeuvre asks for a moped-like handling technique. Another relevant experience was that technology failure must be considered as safety critical. Building on the state-of-the-art knowledge, the assessment of the recorded data, the interviews and observations during the test rides, a catalogue of road safety measures related to e-bicycles was finally developed, which can be used as a guideline.
