Electrostatic Spray Deposition (ESD), a Powerful Technique for the Preparation of Nanostructured ZnO Thin-Films

    Abstract

    Electrostatic Spray Deposition (ESD), a recently developed non-vacuum thin fil technique was used for the preparation of transparent nanostructured ZnO thin films. Zn(No3)2 4H2O precursor was dissolved in ethanol (99.8%) and 80:20 vol% butyl carbitol (99.9%)-ethanol (99.8%) mixtures. The precursor solution was sprayed directly on copper grids which are also used in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The influence of various deposition parameters was investigated. Transmission Electron Microscopy was used to determine structure, morphology, and particle size distribution of the ZnO thin films. The particle size of the electrostatic spray deposited nanostructured ZnO thin films varied between 18 to 6 nm in the investigated precursor concentration region of 0.01 to 0.2 mol/l. The polycrystalline ZnO thin films exhibit the wurtzite structure.
