Abstract
The EuropeanUnionisdividedontheissueofelectricityproduction.Whilethereisconsensusthat
generationtechnologiesneedtobelowongreenhousegasemissions,thequestionofwhethertouse
renewablesornucleartomeetthispowerdemandishighlycontroversial.Bothoptionsstillrequire
financial supportandthisisnotgoingtochangeinthenearfuture.Thisraisesthequestionofwhere
public moneyshouldbeinvestedinordertoachievegreatereconomicefficiency: intosupportforre-
newableenergies(RE)orsupportfornuclearpowerplants?
This papersetsouttoanswerthisquestion.Thedetailedmodel-basedprospectivescenarioassess-
ment performedinthisstudyprovidesthebasisforestimatingfuturecostdevelopments.Afterdis-
cussing theexistingsupportschemesforrenewables,thepapercomparesthesewithanuclearmodel.
The comparisonisconductedexemplarilyfortheUnitedKingdom(UK)atacountrylevelandfortheEU
28 verall.TherecentstateaidcasefortheconstructionoftheHinkleyPointnuclearpowerplant(NPP)in theUKservesasthemodelforthenuclearoption.
