abstract = "Traffic loads on bridges have undergone many changes since they were first standardised. While at first the loads typically represented real vehicles, this has been increasingly replaced by load modells which resulted in internal forces equal to or greater than real vehicle traffic. In this article, we use the example of German standards to illustrate how this change has taken place and ellaborate the statistical methods available for determining the reliability levels that meet the expectations of our society. Differences between the traffic and bridge characteristics in Germany and Hungary are addressed and the potential for domestic application in Hungary is assessed.",
