Abstract
Point-of-care medical diagnostics require rapid, parallel and reliable analysis of trace amounts of biomarkers. In order to address these needs, research in plasmon-enhanced fluorescence
(PEF) has been pursued to advance the sensitivity of fluorescence-based bioassays. PEF was shown allow for order of magnitude increasing of the signal-to-noise ratio of detected fluorescence signal. The confined field of localized and propagating surface plasmons can couple withfluorophores at the absorption and emission wavelengths to provide combined enhancement ofthe excitation rate, directional emission and improved fluorophore quantum yield
