Abstract
The highest steel production capacity is currently in Asia, China, India, Japan, then USA, and Russia. Iron, steel, and metal productions have a very long tradition in the mankind. Managing the development and research in this branch enhance the lifestyle, the civilization tremendously. Our modern daily life depends completely on products coming from iron or steel production and material science. However, Europe as well as China produces overcapacity of steel. China, Russia, India offer steel products at all levels of quality and very competitive prices. Europe, USA, and Japan can only compete with high-tech products, which require the newest knowledge and research. Germany transplanted the Dortmund steel plant to China with all the know-how for rebuilding and running the plant. How is the landscape regarding publication in Metallurgy & Metallurgical Engineering, in Material Science, with Topics round "steel", "composites", or "nanomaterials" with regard to the top crude producing countries? This contribution reveals that high productivity in steel production implies a high science activity. France has one of the best ratios between publications in this fields - crude steel production - population. The countries in Asia (besides Japan) behind USA and the European countries like France and Germany. Surprisingly there is no co-authorship between the Dortmund region and Shagang.
