Abstract
The urgent need for sustainable mobility in Europe is
undeniable. With over 75% of the European population
living in urban areas1 rapid urbanization is a significant
factor contributing to rising emissions and increasing-
ly congested transportation networks. The transport
sector accounts for approximately 25-30% of total EU
greenhouse gas emission2, highlighting its substantial
impact on the environment. Additionally, congestion in
European cities leads to significant economic losses,
often amounting to billions of Euros annually due to
wasted time, fuel consumption, and increased pol-
lution3. Meeting the ambitious goals of the European
Green Deal4, which includes specific emission reduc-
tion targets for the transport sector, requires trans-
formative solutions—a fundamental shift in how we
design, manage, and utilize transportation systems.
The MobiSpaces project5 6 7 offers a pioneering ap-
proach to this challenge. By leveraging the power of
artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT),
and decentralized data management, MobiSpaces
empowers stakeholders to build smart, sustainable
mobility ecosystems. The project focuses on integrat-
ing lifecycle mobility data to enhance urban and mar-
itime transport sustainability, accelerating the green
transition.
This whitepaper serves as a comprehensive guide to
understanding the potential impacts of the MobiS-
paces project. It outlines the critical challenges facing
sustainable mobility in Europe, highlights the innova-
tive approaches championed by MobiSpaces, and
provides an impact roadmap. Central to the docu-
ment is an exploration of how the project’s initiatives
align with policy objectives and generate tangible en-
vironmental, economic, and social benefits, creating a
pathway for stakeholders to replicate and scale these
successes.
