The use of virtual environments instead of real field or laboratory environments offers the possibility to combine the benefits of both environments to create a realistic experience with high experimental control. However, before virtual environments are able to replace the traditional environments the differences between the methods must be worked out. This Master Thesis takes up on previous studies which compared different real and virtual environments concerning presence and usability and expands this for the factor user experience. A virtual and a real field environment were compared in a between-subject design concerning presence and the usability and user experience of a geocaching game. The analyzed data showed significantly higher ecological validity and usability as well as a higher pragmatic quality for the real field environment and higher values of engagement, negative effects and hedonic quality for the virtual field environment. The results indicate that virtual environments can substitute a real environment for user experience studies, when the influence of presence is considered.
