Envisioning BCI– Neurotechnological Diegetic Prototyping in Science-Fiction film

Activity: Talk or presentation / LecturePresentation at a scientific conference / workshop

Description

For almost a century, the research on Brain-Computer Interfaces has inspired Science-Fiction film makers to address philosophical questions about the nature of human being and the capabilities of technologys. Following the depictiong of diegetic prototypes in SF films, this research investigates the socio-technical imaginaries surrounding brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) in (SF). The study builds on the idea that SF reflects contemporary hopes, fears, and discourses on emerging technologies that become appearent in the depiction of the fictional devices.

These depictions, however, extend beyond technological feasibility, embedding themselves in a broader SF megatext. By analyzing SF works that feature BMIs, this study identifies three key tropes: (1) The Neurointerface as Enhancement, where technology augments human capabilities; (2) The Neurointerface as a Media Apparatus, enabling direct cognitive immersion into virtual experiences; and (3) The Neurointerface as a Path to Immortality, facilitating mind-uploading and the transcendence of biological limitations.

Applying a hermeneutic approach, the study examines how these tropes reflect and influence contemporary technological expectations. Science fiction is positioned as a cultural repository of techno-visions, guiding public discourse and shaping real-world innovation. By decoding the socio-technical imaginaries embedded in SF’s depictions of BMIs, this research contributes to the broader field of technology futures, highlighting the interplay between speculative narratives and
technological development. This project ultimately aims to bridge the gap between cultural studies and technology assessment, demonstrating the vital role of SF in shaping how we conceive of and interact with emerging neurotechnologies.
