OPTIMIZATION BASED INTEGRATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURE HEAT PUMPS IN INDUSTRIAL ENERGY SUPPLY SYSTEMS OF PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY

Activity: Talk or presentation / LecturePresentation at a scientific conference / workshop

Description

Efficiency increase is a crucial measure for industrial energy supply systems, not only due to regulatory frameworks and requirements regarding climate protection measures but also to maintain economic competitiveness. As (high-temperature) heat pumps reduce primary energy consumption, they pose a promising opportunity. Their relevance in the energy transition and to mitigate industrial climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions is also highlighted in the report on "Net zero emissions" by the International Energy Agency. According to the pathway net zero emissions until 2050 heat pumps with a monthly capacity of 500 MW heating power need to be installed. Thus, technically and economically viable integration concepts for heat pumps and especially high temperature heat pumps need to be highlighted since they are crucial to meet this ambitious goal. As the production of pulp and paper accounted for approximately 6% of global industrial energy consumption in 2017, it is crucial to identify economic pathways to carbon neutral paper products. Steam up to 200°C is the most relevant energy carrier in this sector and thus, high temperature steam generation heat pumps provide a significant potential for decarbonization and efficiency increase in this sector. To address this potential the authors developed a mixed-integer linear programming formulation for cost-optimal energy supply systems including high-temperature heat pumps for steam supply. Within this work sector-typical excess heat streams and steam demand characteristics are considered. The objective function includes operational and capital expenditures. Potentials for high temperature heat pump integration are identified and the resulting economic and environmental impacts are evaluated.
