Content
Definition: “An eHealth application is defined as any use of an electronic information and communication technology to promote health or to improve health” (British Medical Journal, Vol. 327, August 2003, 300-1)
The lecture will cover the following areas:
• Introduction: What is eHealth (history, definition and differentiation)
• Challenges in the healthcare system and eHealth solutions (e.g. e-card)
• Basic technologies (mobile communications and Internet)
• Selected technologies (wireless, implants)
• Legal and health policy framework conditions
• The electronic health record / health card
• Patient-centered care (home, health and telemonitoring)
• Knowledge-based systems
• Information and communication technology in biomedical research
• Future aspects and resources for specialization in the field
Content requirements: -
Goal:
After successful completion of the course
1. students understand the term eHealth and related terms such as telemedicine and health telematics
2. students will have become familiar with various eHealth applications
3. know the relevant aspects of the healthcare system and the current status of the development of the eHealth infrastructure in Austria, in particular with regard to the electronic health record (ELGA)
4. know the significance of the information and communication technologies involved in healthcare
5. students understand the importance of ICT in selected areas of clinical/biomedical research
6. students are able to evaluate the possibilities and limitations as well as the opportunities and risks of using ICT in healthcare
7. students will be able to familiarize themselves with additional aspects of eHealth via further sources
