Acoustic in-depth analysis of rumble strips

Abstract

Rumble strips are often used as measure against accidents caused by inattentive drivers. Due to the generated vibrations and rumbling noise the driver is alerted of leaving his assigned lane and therefore has the chance to react early to a possibly hazardous traffic situation. Nevertheless, due to the additional noise produced by these audio-tactile edge lines, they may not be feasible in the vicinity of inhabited areas. In this paper, an in-depth analysis of the exterior noise produced by these rumble strips is presented. Near-field measurements were performed using a CPX trailer running the test tyre on the rumble strip. It is shown that when entering the strip, additional narrow frequency bands, dependent on the vehicle speed as well as the distance
