Consumer 2 Grid - a long-term field trial comparing energy consumption feedback approaches

Abstract

Energy-related feedback is a popular method to inform consumers about their domestic energy consumption [1]. There are various ways and mediums to provide energy consumption feedback and reported energy savings differs between zero and 20% [2]. Within the present paper, we introduce preliminary findings of a one year lasting field trial (N = 248) in Austria. Within this trial we compare different energy consumption feedback approaches including real-time, ambient and paper pencil approaches. Evaluation was conducted using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Results indicate that in general energy consumption feedback is highly valued and a useful information for consumers which raise participants awareness of their energy consumption. The compared approaches did not differ with regard to quantitative energy consumption data. On a long-term perspective interest and attention in the respective feedback approach declined. We think this is caused by the fact that in a stable context situation like a private household the investigated feedback approaches lack to provide consumers with added benefit. Final results and conclusions will be available after completion of the trial by the end of this year.
