    Abstract

The efficient use of smart grid technologies supports the `Energiewende' (energy transition) and the cognification (increasing intelligence in system operation) enabling smart communities. An Austrian flagship project called PoSyCo - Power System Cognification - aims for the development of a blueprint of smart grid implementation by advanced power system protection functionalities from a system specific point of view. These solutions will become necessary in the face of the challenges of efficient and secure operation of smart community's supply infrastructure in order to master the expected complexity. To realize that, the next implementation steps within a testbed environment in Vienna are outlined aiming at a Proof-of-Concept towards a safe and reliable protection of the power system in the future.
