Abstract

The model for the frost growth and densification, based on the work of Hermes et al. (2009), is in the focus of the present paper. This model features a sound physical description of the frosting process, and at the same time it is suitable for the implementation into a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. Thereby, for the analysis of the heat pump frosting performance, detailed spatial and temporal resolution of the relevant flow quantities adjacent to the frosting surfaces is enabled. The implementation of this model, and its application on the numerical investigation of the frosting characteristics of heat exchanger fins are presented here.
