Abstract
The physical aspects of the electromagnetic field distribution in the complex environment next to GSM base stations and the necessary requirements on exposure assessment protocols are analysed in this paper. Homogeneity, impact of the environment and averaging procedures are analysed, the legal situation in the European Union and in the United States and existing exposure assessment protocols are discussed.
