Abstract

The present work deals with the design of a control concept based upon the approach of model based predictive control to ensure the optimal use of sustainable energy sources in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Furthermore, the energy consumption of controlled systems as well as the maximized use of the sun light as a renewable energy source is taken into consideration. Thereby, a profound knowledge of the system dynamics is inevitable and requires suitable mathematical models to describe the behaviour of the controlled systems. The development of convenient mathematical models to describe the system dynamics and to allow for a systematic approach towards the design of controllers represent an essential part of this thesis. Hereby, in order to ensure better predictions and thus account for the system operation with higher energy efficiency, weather forecast (by for instance providing information about the solar radiation or the ambient temperature) as well as load profile information (of for instance the heat flow and the temperature from and to the consumer or the load) should be regarded and forwarded to the controller. Upon the development of control strategies we shall gain knowledge about how heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems can be controlled in an energetically optimal way. The performance of the model based predictive control designed for a solar thermal system used for heating is outlined here in extensive simulation studies considering real-case scenarios. It is clearly illustrated that with model based control techniques improvements of the energy-efficient system operation can be achieved in very a systematic and replicable way in comparison to the conventional control strategy incorporating PID controllers. Plant-model mismatch reduction is moreover carried out methodically using state and parameter observers such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF). According to an extensive analysis in the field of HVAC systems, the Kalman filter approaches represent a novelty and a very straight-forward and computationally effective way of reducing the negative effects of plant-model mismatch and contribute to achieving better performance in terms of energy-efficient control operation.
