Abstract
Conventional control concepts for the HVAC systems in a building are common-ly based on empirical considerations. These control methods have a non-transparent impact on the energy efficient building operation. The control objectives are usually designed to be rigid and mainly aim at stabilizing the HVAC process. The physical behavior of the controlled HVAC and building processes is the key factor for reliable and energy-efficient HVAC and building operation, but the control concepts of today miss a tight link between their imple-mentation and the goals of operation. Advanced model-based control concepts (MBC) show remarkable advantages in this respect as they bring building automation on the way towards driving building management by goals (like maximizing energy efficiency) that can be directly used on controller level.
