Monitorig Suburban Developments from Space: an Application from the Greater Vienna Region

Abstract

With the trend of increasing suburbanisation rises also the need for up-date and reliable information on where building activities have taken place. Although detailed information on land use is often available for large cities, it is in general not available for surrounding rural areas. In this paper a method for monitoring the development of built-up areas using high spatial resolution panchromatic satellite images is proposed. Based on textural parameters a differentiation between settlement/no-settlement is automatically obtained. This procedure was applied to panchromatic satellite images from 1968 (Corona) and 1999 (IRS-1C) for the City of Vienna and its surrounding areas (covering approximately 7.000 km²). The resulting data base was further subdivided into different urban classes (e.g. residential, industry, etc.) by means of visual interpretation. Based on this data it is possible to carry out detailed analysis on a spatial level usually not available outside of large cities.
