    Abstract

We have developed nanolayer passivated interdigitated impedance electrodes and investigated the effects of metal oxide coating on obtained impedance signals. FEM simulations revealed decreased electrical field edge-spikes on the passivated electrode surface compared to classical open electrodes. In other words the electrical current density is distributed more homogeneous across the electrode surface, thus resulting in an increase in cellular sensitivity over the electrode area. The application of a single biocompatible material further allows for uniform surface coatings and modifications to generate improved biointerfaces for cell analysis.
