Optical Wireless Access with Phased- / Focal-Plane Array Beamformers and Multi-Core Coupled APD Diversity Receiver

    Abstract

    We present a straight-lane OWC link with beamformers at mobile user and hotspot. We offset free-space path loss through diversity gain realized by a mode-coupling receiver, enabling reception at 1-Gb/s at a BER of 10-10 for an OWC budget of 55.2 dB – without optical amplifier.
